W.M. Hartshorne's Journal of Journey to Detroit, 1793.

This journal is an account of William Hartshorne's journey to attend treaty negotiations between the government and Indians held at Sandusky, Ohio. He was part of a delegation of Friends appointed by the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, a group which included Quaker minister, William Savery, who also kept a journal of the trip. Hartshorne kept a daily account of his impressions of his encounters with Indians, government representatives, and the treaty situation.

William Savery (1750-1804) was born September 14, 1750, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of William and Mary (Peters) Savery. Educated in local schools, Savery was then apprenticed in the tanning industry. He was a business Friend of Philadelphia and a prominent minister. In 1778, he married Sarah Evans. Savery was first recognized a minister in 1781, and traveled on religious visits throughout America and Europe. In 1796, Savery traveled to England via Germany, France, and the Netherlands...

William Hartshorne, Quaker diarist, was born circa 1748. The son of Robert and Sarah Hartshorne, he was a member of Shrewsbury and, later, New York Monthly Meetings. In 1793 he attended an Indian treaty conference in Sandusky, Ohio. In 1797, he married Sarah Lawrence.
